The film stars Akshay Kumar, Juhi Chawla, Vivek Oberoi, Bipasha Basu and Preeti Jhangiani. It revolves around a rich businessman, who meets three orphans and decides to adopt them. However, the businessman changes his mind, on the advice of his family and friends, after meeting the children. The film is a remake of the 1998 Telugu film Chitram and was the second highest grossing film of the year 2001, behind Dilwale. It was released on 11 September 2001.
Plot
The three orphaned children – Amit, Ajay and Mitali – were found near the Garbage Piles in Delhi. They were adopted by the billionaire Gautam Saxena's secretary, Vikram, who looks after him in his later years.
Gautam is a widower with three daughters: Bijli, Mayuri and Aditi. After the death of his first wife, he adopted Aditi and she grew up to be a successful model. One day, his second wife's ex-boyfriend killed her. Upset at the murder of his beloved wife, Gautam fell in love with his secretary Vikram. After 10 years of marriage, Gautam finds out that he is sterile. Vikram suggests adoption. Gautam meets the three children and starts thinking about bringing them up. He is concerned about how he would teach them discipline and motivate them to be well mannered.
Says Mayuri, "You can't beat up a boy when he's bad. You've got to change his heart. You've got to make him good". Gautam is shattered and starts thinking of returning the children. Gautam's business, "Granite International", runs into financial trouble, and he has to sell off company shares to the rich businessman Kamal Mathur. Mathur buys all the shares and will run the company. He wants to sell the property and return the children. Gautam agrees to sell off the shares. Mathur also wants Gautam to sign a new agreement with him, that he and Gautam will co-operate, and one of them will run the company. Gautam agrees. A day later, Gautam gives his daughters the share certificates in front of them, and tells them that he is giving them away. Bijli and Mayuri are shocked, as they do not want to give up the children
